I ran across an article written by a 44 year-old mother who’s a black belt in Karate. She teaches 10 self-defense techniques to help you when you get into a physical altercation or crisis. Turns out…these work great in a creative crisis as well.
- “Breathe.” When we come to a creative crisis, we can’t panic. Take a few moments to breathe and calm down.
- “Recognize the importance of attitude.” Don’t “defeat” yourself before you’ve even begun to create. You can conquer this creative crisis.
- “Be courageous.” Don’t be afraid of the ideas you have. The most crazy ideas might be your biggest allies.
- “Make a commitment to your goals.” If you aren’t devoting time and energy to your creative goals, you’ve already lost the battle.
- “Treat everyone with respect, including yourself.” Too often we wish we someone else when faced with a creative crisis. Don’t underestimate yourself, though.
- “Be flexible.” Don’t try the same things you usually try. Be willing to mix it up a bit.
- “Stay centered and focused on what’s important to you.” Be yourself. It’s easy to see someone else’s creativity and feel pressured to be like them.
- “Retain a beginner’s mind. This is a term Zen masters give to the humble state of always being open to learning new things.” Always learn.
- “Be positive.” You can do this!
- “Seek to resolve conflicts without fighting.” Take the path of least resistance. Don’t over create. Easy and simple is better than complicated.
I would have to agree! Great list, and thanks for sharing.

Glad you like it! I was so excited to find out creativity is so similar to hand-to-hand combat. 😛
