Today’s my birthday. I’m turning 31. Yikes. For some reason, I thought I’d feel like an adult and have things figured out when I turned 30. One year later, it turns out that’s not true.
So here are 31 things I still need to learn. Hopefully this’ll be the year I get this stuff worked out. We’ll see.
- Less insecurity when people tell me no or criticize me.
- More willingness to ask people for help. I’m afraid of “no’s”.
- More “presence” when I’m with my niece and wife. Resist the urge of my phone.
- More encouragement to others when I’m with them. No more negativity.
- Less snap judgments about others. Just because they have a bumper sticker on their car for a politician I dislike doesn’t mean I should think less of someone.
- More initiative in reaching out to the people I think are awesome and getting together with them for coffee.
- Better writing skills. I’m planning on honing my craft even more by reading through some resources.
- More adventure, by seeking out scary experiences that take me out of my comfort zone.
- More exploration by being more curious about things.
- Less annoyance. It’s a rare thing that I don’t like someone. I’d like to completely eradicate that from my life.
- More romance. But only directed toward my wife. 😉
- More delegation of tasks to other people that I don’t need to do myself.
- More reliance on God, even on things that I feel I have under control.
- More risk in business ventures.
- More tenacity on those businesses…not just to make more money, but to steward what God has given me.
- More hours of deep thought.
- Less distraction.
- More intentional play, and less opting to just sit on the couch and watch TV.
- Know my city better by seeing all the great things it has to offer.
- More joy in pain. I want to look for the good, even in the bad.
- More working out with my wife. I know that’s not one of the five, but I’m pretty sure it’s her love language.
- More understanding of what minorities experience.
- More long walks without headphones.
- More diversity in my friendships.
- New foods all the time, because variety is the spice of life…and of eating.
- More digging into the Bible.
- Less being intimidated by people I think are better than me.
- Embracing new technologies without them taking control of my life.
- More investment in family.
- Less divided mental energy when I’m working on something.
- More trying new things.
