Failed-at-Self-Motivation

5 Ways I Failed at Self-Motivation

Today’s been an uninspired day. Unfortunately, this happens to be my blogging day. So it was pretty frustrating when I sat down at Starbucks to blog, and nothing came. I had my topics laid out. I had my favorite beverage, but I was totally unmotivated.

And it didn’t help that my wife (across from me) was unmotivated too. We were distracting each other from our work, and neither of us minded.

This is the side of me you rarely see in this blog. I usually only share the things that worked to get me out of a creative funk. Today I thought I’d share what didn’t work:

  • Cruising Pinterest – you may feel like you’re getting inspired. But it’s really just a distraction from the task at hand.
  • Sitting, staring at my computer screen - you won’t get motivated doing that.
  • Playing Angry Birds - another distraction.
  • Listening to annoying music on Pandora - I tried to shake things up by listening to the Wiggles. I wanted to kill myself in about 30 seconds.
  • Waiting for friends to sign online to Skype - I was hoping someone would get on to inspire me. I was wasting time.

Despite the fact that I tried five things that didn’t motivate me to create, I did do one thing that worked. One thing I did was right. I decided to get motivated. I explored my options until I found the ability to create again. I was willing to do the wrong things as long as it meant I’d eventually stumble on the right thing to get me motivated.

You need to decide to get motivated. Then do stuff to get motivated.
