This isn’t my typical blog post, but I love this idea. BJ Novak of “The Office” fame, created a kids book with no pictures. Talk about a limitation. Talk about a bad idea. Yet he made it good.
And it so perfectly illustrates two of the ideas in Created for More. The first is the idea of being limited. Limitations force creative solutions. The second idea is a creative exercise that encourages you to think of a bad idea, then figure out how to turn it into a good idea.
BJ’s implementation of these two ideas creates something distinctively creative and new. And I imagine it’ll sell quite a few copies.
All that said, I encourage you to pick it up. Purchase The Book with No Pictures along with Created for More and get your creativity on.
This is a great point. I think many of us creatives excelled while in art school due to the ‘limitations’ forced upon us by assignments. As we move on, I think we find it difficult to create when there are no limitations, no boundaries, just endless possibilities. As a designer, I have said for years, our main job is problem solving. When I have a problem to solve (a purpose) i found it very easy to be creative. When I don’t, i find it difficult to come up with something on my own. I always find it necessary to have purpose behind creating.
love the perspective on creativity being about problem solving. definitely agree 🙂
