Loads of politicians run on the platform of making America the greatest nation on earth. But have you noticed that no matter how many economic or political changes we make, nothing seems to really change? We’re still in massive social turmoil.
But I believe there are four things that, if we all adopted them, would make America truly great. And they have nothing to do with economic changes, political parties, or anything else like that. In fact, these four things are small heart changes we can all make right now to move our nation toward greatness. Here they are:
Pride
Think of it like this: When you get a new car, you take pride in that car. You keep it washed. You keep it in good working order. You take care of it.
If more citizens were to take pride in their country, they would do what it takes to make it an amazing place. America would be the cleanest. It would be in the best working order. And businesses would even take part in that.
Hospitality
Along with pride, hospitality would go a long way. Whenever someone new comes into the country or into your neighborhood, instead of looking at them weird and wondering why they’re there, you would welcome them in. “Can I help you find something? Are people treating you right?”
When someone comes into my home, even if I didn’t invite them, I want to make sure they feel comfortable. I want to offer them kindness. Imagine if we treated our neighborhoods and our country like that.
Different races, ethnicities, and cultural groups would feel welcomed and loved. We’d embrace those differences and even try to understand them more. We’d create an atmosphere of understanding and hospitality that would break down walls of hatred and fear.
Ownership
Pride and hospitality will only manifest itself when we take ownership of our country. We need to understand it’s our responsibility to welcome. It’s our responsibility to keep the place clean. We aren’t merely guests to the party. We’re hosting the thing.
Stewardship
Finally, one of the best attitudes we could all adopt toward our nation is an attitude of stewardship. We should feel a sense of ownership, but ultimately we need to realize the nation isn’t our own. We are merely taking care of the country that God entrusted to us. We are responsible for what we do as members and voters in the country.
Ultimately God gets it all back at the end. So the way we treat people, the way we manage our resources…we’re accountable to God for all of that. When we approach our country with an attitude of stewardship, we make good decisions that have longterm benefits. We don’t just do what feels right in the moment.
Finally, the Bible tells us that the nations who are most blessed are the ones whose ruler is God. (Psalm 33:12) Unfortunately, God isn’t on the ballot. But when we share with others about Him, we do that.
None of this has anything to do with the ballot box. It has to do with heart attitudes. And that’s ultimately what will make this nation great—as hearts are pure, loving toward others, and turned toward God.
What would you add to this list? What do you think will make America the greatest nation on earth?
Woo! Good stuff. Can I vote for you this year?
