Life is unfair. Sometimes the most qualified job applicant doesn’t get the job. The best artists aren’t necessarily the ones who make it big. Why is that? Artists can be jerks. And people don’t like to work with jerks.
Highly emotional and sensitive arent usually the easiest character traits to work with. Do people find it difficult to work with you?
It’s not that us artists are bad people. But we are perfectionists. We get frustrated when things aren’t just right. Pile on our emotional natures and we can be a handful. We can come across like prima donnas. “It’s ok that I’m a prima donna. I’m an artist.”
May I propose being easy to work with is more important than being the most artistic? Try this. Become an artist people love to work with. Leave every person you work with begging to work with you again.
No joke! I had to learn that early on in ministry! Being part of a “team” is difficult for creatives when they have their vision and their ideas about how they think they should go. Stepping back and allowing others to help craft and design takes a big gulp of your pride! The more you do it and allow yourself to be stretched it actually becomes fun to be in that environment. Don’t ever walk into a job thinking your ideas are the only ideas. Be willing to connect with others and share the process….even when you dont feel they are the creative genius you are!
yep. that’s a big issue…we think other people don’t “get it” like we do. arrogance…dangerous to creativity…
