Who says there are no bad ideas in brainstorming? I don’t believe it. I’ve been in plenty of brainstorming sessions that did more harm than good.
The bad idea in brainstorming is the one that hijacks the meeting. These are the ideas that are slightly off topic that open up a distracting can of worms. Inevitably you’ll find yourself careening down an off-topic slope. You’ll waste valuable time. Then you’ll start dreading your next brainstorming meetings.
How do you avoid bad ideas in brainstorming? Limit your meetings. Keep them lean so the brainstorming actually brings you good ideas. I’ve found the only ones who chant, “no bad ideas” are the moderator, and the one who wants to hijack the meeting.
Have you experienced this? What are your thoughts?
Leadership is a great assistant. It is like a dodging a bullet. Let it rcochet and keep moving. That is not too hard without arresting the hijacker.
true…leadership is important to keeping the brainstorming boat on course. 🙂

Hi, Jonathan
Found out about your blog(s) from chrisfromcanada.com. Great stuff.
Thanks for expressing this thought. I, too, have been a part of too many brainstorming meetings that completely got out of hand, all in the name of "no bad ideas". I've always thought that was a silly statement, personally. I definitely don't want to hinder idea development, but I think it is important for the leader to lead, for the right people to be invited, and for those who come to come prepared and intentional.
Intentional. Exactly! 🙂
