Jonathan,
This is so very important for me. I definitely needed to read this. Often times, I think we get lazy and sit on our hands and continue to think instead of act because it IS a lot of work. To add to that, its also a dream that doesn’t just manifest in mid-air within seconds or hours ( as fast as we dream) compared to the time it takes to work (a later date launch months later).

I think the artists that end up on CCM radio are just like the rest of us musicians and artists. They love music and want to make music that moves them and moves others.

But the same machnie inflicts its destruction on their art as that which inflicts it on the art of secular songwriters: the almighty record industry seeking the almighty dollar via the almighty hit single. It’s a soul-sucking machine, a racket. Unfortunately it’s the best way to get your music to a mass audience. But the internet, social media, and sits like Kickstarter and Noisetrade are changing that.

I also hear really successful people all the time talk about how even they have to consciously keep themselves motivated everyday by putting in a motivational cd when they wake up. Whatever your particular method, I think they hit right at home the fact that ALL of us, no matter how big we may be, have to consciously hype ourselves up. No one is automatically motivated throughout every day.

This is a great series. I’m finally starting to get insecurity and perfectionism under control. Laziness is definitely the main obstacle standing in my way now…and a little fear of failure haha. I know what I need to get done, I just don’t wanna do it right now. I just keep doing that over and over everyday. Setting deadlines and having people you’re accountable to is a good idea, I’ll try that. =)

Great advice. I think the thing about actually answering the scary questions going on in your head works really well. It’s counterintuitive. Right now I’ve been putting off calling an important person that can help me with a difficult situation. I asked myself why I still haven’t called him and the answer was simple: I’m afraid he’s gonna tell me bad news tht will make this situation worse than it is instead of better. But answering that question helped me make everything clear in my head which will help me actually do it. I have to use the same technique when I’m gonna ask a girl out haha.

Thanks for this post, Jonathan. Very timely as God has recently moved us to a small town. A very small town where the average age is 60. There isn’t even a mom and pop coffee shop. There are some larger locations not that far away, but the daily existence can be challenging. These are great ideas. I’m saving this post in my creativity file and will be referring back to it.

once a spy movie inspired me with this line: “if you’re on time, then you’re at least 15 minutes late.” so i started a habit of going early for my appointments. then suddenly those 10-30mins early arrival becomes a much appreciated gems. not only i look cooler (of course, i’m not rushing, been all prepared and looking good etc etc), but almost half of my working ideas were started from that small window of boredom.

Unless they’ve invested money in your dream and expect a return on their investment… or they’re monetarily supporting you until you are profitable… that’s really none of their concern now, is it? ;-)
