Man: Honey, guess what I bought today!
Wife: What?
Man: A telephone!
Wife: What’s that?
Man: A curious device that lets you talk with your friends.
Wife: Why do I need that? Everyone I know is within walking distance.
Man: It will make communication so much simpler!
Wife: Do we know anybody with telephones?
Man: Well….no.
Wife: So…how is that useful…?
Man: … (walks away with head hanging)
I imagine that was the conversation for most early adopters of the telephone. Some of the greatest ideas started out being “useless.” It didn’t make sense to some people because it was so far outside the realm of everyday life.
When you create, you have to realize that nobody else has the vision for your creation quite like you do. When you present your idea to others you will often hear, “So…how is that useful…?”
You can argue your point ad nauseum, but if they don’t have the vision for it they don’t have the vision. Don’t let other people’s blindness rub off on you. If your vision is good, press on. The telephone was once useless, now it’s indispensable.
