I see too many people complaining. Complaining about lack of budget, lack of time, lack of resources. What they’re really demonstrating is a lack of creativity. Sure, everyone wants a huge budget like Superbowl advertisers. They can call up Justin Bieber, an HD video crew, and brilliant writers to sell us Chia Pets if they want. And who wouldn’t want to buy a Chia Pet from Justin Bieber?
But a company’s ability to throw money around doesn’t make them creative. All it shows is that they have money to throw around. The real creative person is achieving the same marketing results from a $50 Youtube/Facebook video as the multi-million dollar ad campaign.
Real creativity doesn’t happen without limitations. When you have the means to execute the first idea that comes to your head, you aren’t having to be brilliant. “Let’s get Justin Bieber to dress up like Shirley Temple and have him running from an exploding building holding our product.” That’s not creative…even though it would probably go over great as a Superbowl commercial.
The real creative works out their ideas. He has a spark of genius, realizes it’s beyond his means, then the creativity begins. He finds a way to do the same thing (or better) at half the price.
So next time you catch yourself complaining, realize you’ve lost “creativity points”. Next time you’re complaining, realize you’re missing out on an amazing opportunity to be creative. Don’t complain. Welcome obstacles and limits. Be creative.
