I’m writing a book. A devotional for creatives. I have so much great info I want to share, that sometimes I forget I need to make this thing enjoyable to read. Novel concept, right?
I think that’s a syndrome of how seriously artist take themselves. We have such conviction for our craft, that we take it very seriously. We want everyone else to take our work seriously too. So we create while wearing a frowny or concentrated face. And it shows up in our work.
But art can be fun! Even serious art! My favorite novels are thrillers. But my favorite thrillers always make me smile while I read them. They’re fun. The characters have funny personalities or the situations are ironic. Fun!
I encourage you to take a step back from your work. Right now. Step back. Is your creation fun for your audience? Why not introduce one of these things into your art:
- Interactivity – let your audience interact with your art. That’s fun.
- Humor – laughing or grinning is always fun.
- References or homages – let people solve the puzzle of connecting your art to something else they love.
- Stories – stories always make something more entertaining.
Those are a few ways I try to make my art more enjoyable.
How do you do it?
And to end out this post – since I didn’t actually add any of those elements to my post – I leave you with this video.
