Today’s Idea Sparkler is all about making people uncomfortable. (Don’t get so excited, guys with thick mustaches in white vans parked at playgrounds.) Making people feel uncomfortable is a powerful technique to get your message across. If you watch The Office, you’ve seen comedy that makes you feel uncomfortable. They create some of the most awkward situations…
Speaking of awkward situations, check out this great ad that presents an awkward situation, indeed:
If you’re a girl who’s never had to deal with urinals (I’m assuming if you’re a girl you haven’t) you might not get it. Guys generally don’t like to be too close to other guys–especially during private moments. It gets a strong point across.
Note: Good use of this technique requires redemption after the uncomfortable feeling. This ad’s redemption comes from the boot that keeps your foot comfortable. The Office’s redemption comes from the fact that it isn’t real.
How can you make people feel uncomfortable to get your point across? Check out a video that made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. And look for the redemption at the end. Beautiful!
