Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words will cut you deeper. At least that’s what the Bible indicates when it says there’s both life and death in the power of the tongue.
One idle word or sentence at the wrong time can discourage you. Dissuade you. Destroy you. But there’s one word that seems to scare dreamers more than anything. This one word keeps many from following their dream or for asking for help. It’s the word “no”.
No matter what you’re asking or how you phrase your question, there’s a good chance you’ll hear no quite a bit. I’ve even learned to say no to those pesky salesmen who seem to know how to trick you into saying yes. “Would you like to learn how to save some money today?” “What if I told you there was a way to get 2,000 more cable channels and save $20/month. Would you be interested in that?” No.
You’re going to hear no if you hope to follow your dream. If you hope to start something new that involves other people. If you find there’s something you need other people to help you accomplish.
Consequently, fear of the N word can keep you from even asking. So many of us assume the answer is no before we even ask the question. You can’t afford to think this way.
Right now, as I write this, I’m putting off sending 10 emails out to ask for new sponsors for Sunday| Mag. I know most of them will say no. But that can’t stop me from asking, otherwise I’ll never get those sponsorships sold. I have to ask. I have to push past the fear of the N word and put myself out there.
Don’t fear no’s. Don’t dwell on them. Move forward and keep asking.
A big Yes to not fearing “no”!
