One of the best ways to get your creative juices going is to think in opposites. Looking for a good idea? Pick something in the room and think of its opposite.
Some things are easy. A white pepper shaker? Try a black salt shaker. But some things require a bit more thought…
What’s the opposite of a vase of flowers? A bag of dead fish? A floating brown rock? A tornado?
To truly discover the something’s opposite, you must identify each characteristic that makes it unique. You create an exhaustive list like:
- Orange color
- Living
- Moderately small
- Container
- Contains water
- Smells good
- Solid but flexible
- Can be spilled
Then each of those characteristics need an opposite. It’s highly unlikely you’ll find an opposite object for a vase of flowers. But as you attempt this exercise you’ll find yourself noticing details that you previously overlooked. You’ll see your surroundings a bit differently than before.
That is what will spark your creativity again–seeing your world differently.
Nice idea. I like it!
Thanks!
