I wish I could say every cool experience in my life was a result of good planning. But most of the things I experience are a result of fortunate proximity at the right time.
My family was on a vacation to England. That was a cool experience in and of itself. But after leaving a tiny bistro after lunch, we overheard the Star Wars theme song. And it sounded like it was live. Curiosity piqued our interest and we searched for the source of the music.
After a few short blocks we stumbled onto a live orchestra rocking out to the Star Wars soundtrack. They were phenomenal. As we listened and observed more, we realized we’d stumbled onto something more official than we thought. This was the Royal Philharmonic – the orchestra that John Williams used to record the soundtrack.
Then a song ended, and the voice of C3PO walked on the stage. Then Ewan McGregor. Then Christopher Lee. It turns out, we’d stumbled upon a matinee performance leading up to the premier of Star Wars Episode 3.
The show ended and people began to leave. The rest of my family were ready to head back to the house. But my brother and I decided we’d stay. We knew something cool was happening and we wanted to be a part.
So we stayed along with a few hundred other people. Then it began to rain. That few hundred people dropped down a few. By the time the premier began, the rain had stopped. But we were also in the front row near the stage.
And that’s how I stumbled onto the Star Wars premier.
Yes, it was lucky timing, but it was also the guts to stick it out in the cold rain.
Great things happen to us as a result of good timing. But more importantly they happen when we’re willing to put in the effort. When opportunity meets with hard work and perseverance, good things happen. Look for chance encounters, and then grab hold of them.
The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is a little extra.

I feel as though I’ve been waiting in the rain in a couple different areas of late. But I do have the sense that the skies may be about to clear, and the way the light will gleam off the wet pavement will make the waiting worth it! Thanks for the reminder.
