I’m convinced that my best ideas come when I’m helping other people with their projects. It’s something about the emotional disconnection that keeps my fear from tainting the great ideas. I experienced this recently.
I was Skyping with a company wanting me to develop a blog very similar to this one. After 20 minutes of chatting I had at least five ideas I wish I would have implemented on Faking Creativity.
The Skypee had very little to do with these ideas. It came almost completely from the fact that it was his project and not mine.
So this is something I’m going to incorporate into my routine. Every month I want to Skype with someone doing similar things to me. Then we are going to brainstorm how we can make each others’ work better.
I’m really excited to see what comes of this. Will you join in on the experiment?

I also had this happen recently. I had an idea for a photography project, but I was talking to a friend who had already done something similar to my idea.
I wanted to make it my own, and not just copy what she had done. She liked my idea and gave me insight on how to take it from “concept” to “execution.”
there’s so much room in the world for the same good ideas. 🙂

So true, Jonathan! I notice this happens a ton when i’m working with clients through our design studio – Whether it’s a new technique/technology/setup that i use on their website or a marketing strategy/etc. It always puts ideas into my head to push my own personal endeavors farther. Cool to know there are others who are in the same boat.
Feel free to hit me up if you think we could benefit from a chat or something, it’d be fun 🙂
definitely, Anthony! I’ve been wanting to connect with you anyways. hit me up on Skype some time at my super original screen name: jonathanmalm 😀

How true! I also seem to have ideas pop into my head when I’m helping someone else with a project. I thought maybe it was just me. Maybe part of it is that by helping someone else, we open another part of our brain to being part of the creative process. Is there a way to develop a list/resource of people willing to be a part of these types of discussions?
we should. I’ve been wanting to put more community into Faking Creativity…that might be a good start. Perhaps we could just do scheduled Skype meetups and whoever can join in can join in. Whatya think?
That sounds like a good place to start and a great idea.
