I struggle with depression. Nothing creative happens when I get depressed.
Fortunately I’ve found the secret source of my depression. Bad eating and lack of exercise.
It’s true. I first discovered this as a teen. My parents went on exciting trips around the world, left me a Benjamin and trusted me to take care of myself. What did I buy? Ramen, frozen dinners, popcorn, chips…you get the idea. I would guzzle multiple Mt. Dews and watch a bunch of TV. After about five days I would crash land in the tar pits of despair.
How did I overcome this depression? I learned to cook. I ate better. I exercised. Now whenever I’m feeling a bit bummed and for no apparent reason…I chomp on some veggies and mow the lawn.
When you take care of yourself, you keep that flow of creativity from being so easily blocked.
Are you feeling creatively drained? Eat some salad. Break a sweat. Check your vitals. It just may do the trick.
PS. If I seem like a fitness buff…I assure you I’m not. I just happened to write this post at Gold’s Gym…and I was feeling super pumped.
Right on! By the way I know a good counselor that can help you overcome the pain of the abandonment you felt as a child. 🙂

Good thoughts. You wrote this at the gym? That is cool. Exercising always gets my mind going. That is why I have to have my phone with me at the gym…so I will have Evernote handy!
HAha. Yep…wrote it at the gym. I think I'll start writing all my blogs there…then I can convince my wife I need an iPad 😀

Great advice. So glad I found the beauty of running several years ago. Exercise changes your whole perspective!

Love the honesty. I feel you on this.
Where I have to watch myself is when I over extend myself in going going going and never take some time to step away, relax, and just be. When I am constantly working I go good for about 3 days then I crash and become completely unmotivated to do anything.
So I feel you on this one. Sleep, just being and as bibly as this sounds, reading the bible is how I fight off depression
nothing wrong with being bibly 🙂
I feel you on being overworked…the only time overworking is good for me is when I'm really excited about everything I'm doing…then it gets me going even more. (but I rarely get to focus solely on things I'm excited about)
