My least favorite part about working at a church was working with people. I’m not going to lie. If I had had my way, I would have done everything by myself – sound, lighting, video, everything.
It’s not that I don’t like people. No, I love people. But it’s hard having to rely on others for your success. They miss deadlines. They rarely carry the same enthusiasm as you. Sometimes people are lazy. And when people tell me “no”, it makes me feel rejected.
It’s a messy business working with people. So imagine my stress now that I’m working on Sunday| Mag, CSDI, and Worship Set Ideas – all sites that rely heavily on the input of other people.
I’m getting used to the fact, though. In fact, I’m embracing it. CSDI wouldn’t be nearly what it is today if it wasn’t for the input of other people. CSDI has far outgrown what I could do on my own.
So I carried that same model into Sunday| Mag. My opinion might reach a few people. But the combined expertise and opinions of my Sunday| Mag team becomes bigger than the sum of all its parts. Again, the strength of others made this something far bigger than me.
I’m taking that same model into Worship Set Ideas and already seeing it pay off.
The point is, there’s huge power in working with inconvenient people. It’s worth the hassle of missed deadlines and having to cast vision. Whether you work at a church, in the corporate world, or any team for that matter – I want to encourage you to embrace the power of people. Know that, through teamwork, you can accomplish far more than you can alone.
Take some Tums if you have to, but learn to work with others and see your success blossom.
