There are two types of churches that don’t have websites:
1. Those that are too traditional to have one…
2. Those that are too modern to have one…
Isn’t that hilarious? Some churches still haven’t joined the website revolution. Some churches have already outgrown the website revolution. This is how fast culture changes…and how slowly some churches move.
But this shows me something interesting: you can do something “right” that becomes the wrong thing if you’re not intentional. And you can do something “wrong” that becomes the right thing if you are intentional.
It’s against modern logic for a church to not have a traditional website. But in some contexts, very successful churches are www-less. It is the right thing for them. But that “right thing” is the wrong thing for most churches. It’s about intentionality.
What this means for you. Don’t be afraid to do the “wrong thing” if it is the right thing in your context. You might seem Neanderthal in your methods…but if you’re being intentional…you might be a revolutionary. Sometimes old school concepts in a new school mind are revolutionary.
Don’t throw out right ideas just because they are the wrong ideas for other people.
Why would they purposely not have a website? It may be “modern” but to me it just seems like they’re trying to be non-conformist, which doesn’t really get anything accomplished. Am I missing something?
You’re so oldschool…haha
Nah…did you know many younger people don’t even have email addresses any more? they use Facebook to communicate. People are starting to use Facebook like Google. So they’re creating a Facebook page instead…it allows people to interact with it much more than a website.
Ya, but doesn’t it still seem non-conformist to purposely not have a website? I mean why not? There’s certainly a lot it can still do, and Facebook pages are still very limited. Why not have both?
Two pages to update with limited staff means spreading yourself thin. Sometimes you have to scale back and only focus on the most beneficial things for yourself. For some people a web page would be nice…but it doesn’t provide enough benefit for the grief.
Okay that makes sense =)
Yet again. It’s not the right idea for everyone.

So what would you suggest to a church that was early with a website and early on facebook but has not kept pace with the new designs or themes? We want to start fresh, but we don’t want it to look like everyone else’s sites that use the out of the box stuff.
I wouldn’t be so concerned with what everyone else’s sites look like. The people who are visiting your site to visit your church…they don’t know what other churches’ sites look like. They just want to see the feel of your church.
There’s nothing wrong with out-of-the-box designs as long as they give people an accurate idea of what your church looks like. 🙂
