When I first started blogging, I was certain I’d become the expert on all creative thought. I named my blog “Faking Creativity” based on a book I wanted to eventually release.
Within a few short weeks my blog started getting 10’s of 20’s of people visiting. But when my blog hovered at that for a few months, I realized I might have tried for more than I could tackle. That’s when I started ChurchStageDesignIdeas.com.
I owned that niche. It was a very specific niche without much competition. So it wasn’t exactly difficult. I very quickly realized, however, that wasn’t the full extent of my passion and my voice. I had a love for all things creative—especially in churches.
So the last couple years I’ve been broadening my voice to include the whole creative process for churches. My e-book, Sunday| Mag, Worship Set Ideas…they are all about scratching that itch I had for scratching a larger niche.
Do my passions stop there? No.
So now I’m in a new place of broadening my voice once again. As I release my devotional in September (with Moody Publishers) and as I’m working to write more books, I’m really having to find the full range of my voice.
It’s a process of discovery. Do I have a unique perspective on creativity? Is it a unique perspective on seeing the big picture? What is my real voice and how far does it go?
If I pull another “Faking Creativity” reach, I’ll fail. My voice (at least right now) isn’t creativity. It’s something more precise. I’m just not entirely sure what that is. But I’ll be taking steps here and there until I start discovering it. And I think that’s the process we all go through to find out our unique voice and how broad or narrow it is.
I know, though, that my whole life will be pushing myself to bigger and better things. I hope I never arrive, because that will mean I’ve stopped growing.
Sooooooooo what you’re saying is… THERE’S A CHANCE!!!!!!!!
Great post man. I resonate with that discovery journey.
Haha. Thanks man. 🙂 All it takes to find your voice is to speak. 🙂
