My boss asked me for a favor the other day. He said, “I’d like you to think about something for me. From your perspective, what’s my unique voice? What would people want to hear from me in a conference session?”
I love his willingness to explore. And I love that he asked for an outside opinion. That shows wisdom and humility.
I think we all struggle with finding our unique voice. We want to know what we’re best at. If we did a Ted Talk…what would we speak about? And I believe very few of us ever discover what that is.
And why do we fail to discover that? We fail to ask. Or we fail to ask the right people.
You probably won’t get the most candid and accurate answer if you ask your mom. She thinks you’re the best thing since sliced bread. But what if you asked someone who reads your blog but doesn’t know you that well. What do they value hearing from you?
I think it’s important to ask anyone that sees us from the outside. And I think it’s important to ask that question often.
Finding your unique voice isn’t a simple, one time gig. It’s a constant exploration. It’s amassing your life experiences and skills, putting them together, and finding what good comes out of that – finding what benefit those elements are for other people.
I’d like to encourage you to go on that journey. I believe it has a profound impact on how you live your life and interact with others. It’ll help you encourage, challenge, and impact others for things that matter.
i love this thought. thanks for the challenge. now to find out what my unique voice is… welcoming any insights from you…

“And why do we fail to discover that? We fail to ask.” Great point. It does take guts, doesn’t it?
