Remember as a kid, having one of those huge dreams? You wanted to be the president. Or the first astronaut on Mars. Or a cowboy. You had one big goal in mind—the crowning achievement of your life you’d one day attain.
But then you grow up and you realize how truly far away from that goal. So you settle for a smaller goal. A few years down the road, you settle for an even smaller goal. Eventually, you train yourself that you’ll never reach any goals and you just give up. You settle for working your 40 hours each week and living for the weekend—to watch some reality TV or some football games.
The problem is, you were dreaming too big.
I’ve never had some grand scheme for my life. I mean, as a kid I wanted to be everything. But I knew they were fleeting obsessions. I always pursued at that moment what I was interested in.
Five years ago I wanted to start a blog that got 100 views/month. Once I achieved that, I wanted to make enough money to cover my hosting and domain name. After that I wanted to make enough money to from the site to supplement the purchase of a house. Eventually I wanted to make a full-time income from the site.
Then I began another site. Another site. Another goal.
I’ve had tiny goals that keep getting bigger. And achieved almost every one of them.
I suppose there’s nothing wrong with having a huge dream for your life. It’s a noble thing. But unless you remember to dream the small dreams that will eventually lead to that big dream…you’ll never reach it.
So begin to dream smaller. Break your big dream up into smaller portions and pursue those dreams. You might find you reach them, and reach them, and eventually even surpass your original, huge dream.
