I’m a bit of a dreamer. And last week, I almost got derailed by an email. One of the folks who are supposed to be one of my biggest advocates told me they didn’t really believe in me.
That led me down a spiral of worries that almost made me want to give up on writing. Fortunately, I realized the worries weren’t exactly valid. I pushed through and kept writing and I’m coming out this week successfully. That doesn’t mean the worries won’t resurface, though.
If you’re a dreamer, you’ll probably deal with these types of worries. But you can’t let them hold you back from pursuing those dreams. Here are the worries and what you should do with them.
What if someone steals my idea?
I’ve run into so many dreamers who are afraid to share their ideas because they worry someone might steal them. Or worse, someone will come along after they’ve launched their idea and do it bigger and better.
It’s true. That happens. But an idea is just one small part. Execution is everything. If you’re willing to commit to making the idea happen in your unique way—the way only you can do it—you don’t really need to worry about this.
More than that: There will always be more good ideas. And you never know which idea will be the one for you. So keep trying.
What if I’m not good enough?
That email I received almost wrecked me because it make me feel inadequate. The problem with feeling “not good enough” is that you’re submitting yourself to someone else’s standard of “good enough”.
The truth is: You’ll never be good enough to satisfy everyone’s standards. Nobody is good enough to do that. But you can be good enough to satisfy the standards that actually apply to you. You don’t have to be good enough for everyone. You just have to do 100% what you can do, and that will be enough.
What if my previous successes are flukes?
The inventor of the pet rock made a million dollars. (It’s true.) And while many would see a million dollar idea as a success, it was a bit of a fluke. It was one weird idea that happened to ride a wave of momentum that’s extremely uncommon.
How is an idea like that even reproducible? It’s not. And if I were the inventor, it would be easy to assume I’d never have an idea like that again.
More likely though, you haven’t even found your pet rock yet. There are more ideas ahead for you. And success is success, wherever it comes from. Nothing is truly a fluke. Success is universal.
What if now isn’t the right time?
You can’t control the right time for your idea. You can only control your action. Trust that action brings results. Do the hard work and let the timing happen when it will.
So those are the worries I frequently have. What worries do you deal with and how do you overcome them? Share in a comment below.
I worry too much about having it be perfect. Whatever it is. Like my blog, having the perfect name/domain, design, plugins, content, etc… Or knowing everything about something I’m interested in.
Perfection is a jerk, isn’t it? 😛
