I run instead of walk. I type faster than I need to. I don’t stay places longer than I want to. It might appear that I’m busy. I am.
But I’m not too busy for the things I really want to do. I can sit on the couch for an hour with my wife talking about nothing. I can catch the latest flick in the theaters or follow my favorite TV show. But the only way I make that happen is by being too busy for the things I shouldn’t be doing.
Some people live their lives at a frantic pace because they overload their schedules. They fill their days with “good” things. But they can’t devote their time to the “best” things. As the quote goes, “good is the enemy of great”.
Good things shouldn’t take as much of your time as the great things. The good things in life include:
- A spotless car.
- The football game you could have DVR’ed so you could skip the commercials…but you want to watch it live instead.
- Reading that trendy book because all the “cool kids” are reading it.
Life is full of too many “good” things that take way too much of our time. Realize that you’re too busy for those things. Save that time for writing your book. For spending time with your spouse. For starting a new business.
I encourage you to live your life so intentionally that you’re too busy for the stuff you shouldn’t be doing.
Awesome post. Really appreciate the angle of avoiding Good things for Great things. Great reminder for me today.
You’re welcome! 🙂

My wife, son, and I moved a few months back and since the move we decided to not do TiVo. We have spent far fewer hours in front of the tv and more time with each other. Totally understand your point.
It’s amazing. One summer my parents threw away the TV…I learned HTML and got a job at a design firm that summer. TV sucks so much of our time away.
