We were in Argentina, staying with some of my wife’s family. She wanted to show them some of what I do, so she introduced them to my blog. They aren’t huge in the blogosphere. I’m not sure they read any blogs or even saw the value in them.
As they tried to understand what my blog was all about, they kept saying things that were missing the mark. “Oh, your blog is like a devotional.”
I replied, “Well. I guess, sort of. It’s not really, though. There’s no real spiritual development in these blog posts.” But I supposed that idea gave them enough to wrap their head around the idea.
As I kept thinking about what they said, though, I realized how right they were. My blog posts were a lot like devotionals. Most of them introduced spiritual principles—even though I didn’t necessarily reference Scripture. Truly, I could probably do a tiny bit of tweaking and really turn my whole blog into a devotional-type blog.
That idea kept percolating in my head. Why shouldn’t I write a devotional? Maybe not a typical devotional, but a devotional my readers would enjoy.
This interaction happened over three years ago. And Created for More is the child of that conversation.
I’ve found some of my best ideas come from trying to explain what I do to people. As they try to compare it to something with which they’re familiar, they often give me great parallel ideas.
I’d never considered a devotional for creative minds until this interaction. I’m so glad I allowed that idea to take root in my head and heart.
I want to encourage you to listen to those who try to understand exactly what you do. Explain your job to a child. To a distant relative. To a person at Starbucks. You might just find your best idea yet.
