Did you know Hillsong United released a remixed techno album? I actually enjoy it. Then this Tuesday, Jesus Culture is releasing their own remixed techno album. Dubstep worship. Interesting.
I had one worship leader friend say, “If this is where worship is heading, I give up. I’m too old for this.” I think that reflects many people’s perspectives on changing fashions and styles. Many are struggling to deal with and accept things like Snap Chat, modern fashions, and most definitely Dubstep worship. How do you deal with it?
Here’s a bit of peace and encouragement for worship leaders fearing the Dubstep revolution. Even if Dubstep is pervasively popular in our culture, it isn’t the only style of music people like. There are still artists like Coldplay, U2, Mumford and Sons…all your faves who are making music. You don’t have to do Dubstep in your worship services just because others are.
But there’s nothing wrong with being massively stylish. Heck, Thomas Jefferson was cool with it. He said, “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.”
Styles come and go… Go crazy for them. But you don’t have to let those styles affect your principles. For instance, a girl doesn’t have to wear the skimpiest bikini because it’s stylish. Her principles can override the style. So she can find a print or pattern that’s popular, but embrace a more modest look if that’s where her principles lie.
Styles are meant to serve our principles. And for many of us, our principles surround reaching people. Impacting people. So use styles to help you with that. When used properly, style can be a useful tool. Use it just like you would a hammer.
When you feel like you don’t need the hammer, don’t worry about it. If it doesn’t serve your purposes, don’t worry about the style trends. But when it does… go for it!
I for one welcome our new BPM overlords.
🙂
