I spend about three hours every morning wandering around the internet and blogging. Then I eat lunch. Then I spend a few more hours doing the same thing. Ya. My life is pretty fascinating. I read a lot. I watch TV. I cook.
You can see why I might be tempted to make my life seem a bit more glamorous than it is. And with the Internet it’s so easy to do that. I could craft each status update to make you jealous of my life…if I wanted to. But I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to create a fake me.
I think we all struggle with the desire to seem better than we are. And I think that stems from insecurity. We aren’t quite sure we have something valuable to offer the world. So we put on a fake face and glamorize our lives. That’s the draw of Instagram. I can make washing my hands seem like a moment of art. How glamorous! Bath and Body Works soap!
But the world needs honest people – especially honest artists.
I encourage you. Instead of running your “mediocre” life through Instagram, do one or both of these two things:
- Recognize that your life does have value and is interesting enough.
- Make your life interesting.
I’ve decided I’ll do both. I’ll start acknowledging the dream job I have of getting to write for a living. But I’ll also step out of my comfort zone and meet interesting people. Do interesting things. There won’t be a need for the phony when I’m done with my life.
Will you join me on the journey of reality? Which of my two suggestions will you implement?

Make Life…Make Life…Make Life!!!!
Definitely a powerful point you made and a very good article here!

Thanks for those great wise words! I do both – make it interesting and understand it already is. And amen to Instagram. I have a love/hate relationship with it. . .

That’s why I work with youth. They’re so honest and open. Little to no fakeness there. Teens can read you better than anyone. They can see fake a mile away. They want/need to see realness. If we don’t reach this generation coming up…scares me to think how the future will be. I’d welcome Jesus to come back any day now!

Great observation. We do try to make ourselves fantastic via social media.
