So God’s given you a dream. Here’s a question for you: Are you supposed to make this dream come true or is God?
There are some people who think God makes it all happen. They think that if you make it happen on your own you aren’t trusting in God. Then there are others who think you have to make it happen yourself. God may have give you the dream but it’s your responsibility to make it happen.
There are two cool stories in the Bible I think of when it comes to this idea of making your own dreams come true. The first is the story of Abraham. The second is the story of the Israelites.
Abraham had a dream from God to become the father of millions of descendants. We all know he missed the mark by taking the dream into his own hands and sleeping with his wife’s servant. He botched up the dream because he didn’t trust God to make it happen.
But then we have the story of the Israelites, who were told to enter into the Promised Land. God gave them the dream to have a land of their own that was perfect for them. Yet we see they missed the mark because they were too afraid to do it on their own. They didn’t want to go to war with the people who currently inhabited the land. They weren’t willing to make their dreams come true through their own effort.
When you look at those two stories, it seems like they tell us completely opposing ideas. One tells us to trust God to make the dream happen, the other tells us to make it happen on our own.
But here’s the difference. In one, someone had to compromise their values and to compromise their dream to make it happen. While Abraham’s son with his wife’s servant would technically be his… It was rather shady and it wasn’t really what he dreamed. That dream was only possible—if everything was to be above board and to match his dream—if God made it happen.
The Israelites were afraid. It was possible for them to go to war. Maybe they thought they wouldn’t win…but that was God’s responsibility. Their responsibility was to try—not to compromise the dream of their values.
Let God do the impossible. You do the possible. Don’t compromise your dreams, and don’t compromise your values. Let God make those things happen.
