I made the decision not to get a gym membership.
Since we moved into a new house, I’ve had a difficult time getting back into the rhythm of working out. I used to have a gym in my apartment complex, so even on hot days I’d just run on the treadmill in the gym. The new house is right next to an amazing running trail, but the weather hasn’t been particularly wonderful for running outdoors (unless you want to get up really early or get heat exhaustion).
But I really want to run. I really need to run. And to be honest, a gym membership will probably not make it easier for me to run. That’s why I elected not to get a gym membership.
You see; I need to run in the morning. That’s what I need. But if I have a gym membership, it’ll be easy for me to put off working out until the afternoon. “I’m tired, I’ll just go to the gym later.”
But the honest truth is that I’d probably never go to the gym. So I’d give myself an excuse to not run in the morning, then make another excuse in the afternoon not to go to the gym.
I think it’s important in life not to give yourself easy outs. Don’t give yourself easy excuses to keep from doing what you need to do.
For each of us, this will look different. You know what “easy outs” you experience.
- You might need to remove a TV from your office.
- You might need to cancel cable.
- You might need to not get that gym membership.
Just don’t give yourself an easy way to neglect doing what you need to do.
