“We’ll pay you $100,000 per year to sit on your couch and watch your favorite show.”
Congratulations, you’ve just found your dream job. Unfortunately, 99.9999% of the population won’t get this sort of offer. And truth be told, you probably wouldn’t find fulfillment in a job like this. Jersey Shore gets old after the first couple hours.
So how do you actually identify that dream job of yours? How do you know the thing that’ll be super fulfilling in your life?
I identify it with this one question: “Would I do this for free if I couldn’t get paid for it?” If the answer is yes, that’s an indication it’s something I love enough to call it a dream. Then when you find the opportunity to get paid for it—that’s your sweet spot. The dream job.
But what do you do when you can’t take that dream and turn it into money? (I’m not entirely sure that’s impossible for anyone…but the reality exists.)
I’ve realized, some of us have other dreams besides making things or organizing things. Some of us love to travel. Some of us want to raise godly kids. Some of us want to spend a ton of time with friends. Some of us want to volunteer at our churches.
If you get a job that enables you to do those things, congrats. You’ve hit on a great job. Just because you don’t marry money with your dream, it doesn’t mean you haven’t found an amazing opportunity. Find something you love to do and do it. That’s following your dream.
The rest of it is just money. And money and opportunities are everywhere, as long as you’re willing to work for it.
Follow your dreams. Do what you love. And don’t stress out of if that doesn’t turn into your career. You can still live a fulfilled life and follow your dreams.
