If you aren’t familiar with pheromone perfume, let me educate you. Pheromones are the chemicals all living things release while mating. It’s a chemical that’s supposed to stimulate attraction between sexes. And there are a few types of perfumes that (supposedly) make use of these chemicals in their recipes to maximize attraction.
That’s what I helped sell in my first job. I was fourteen. I barely even knew what sex was.
Now, that wasn’t the only product I sold. And I didn’t actually directly sell these products. I just helped market the companies that did. I worked for an Internet marketing company, and part of our job was search engine optimization.
Companies paid us hundreds and thousands of dollars to help them show up on the first pages of Google, Yahoo, and AltaVista (retro). In exchange, we built custom landing pages, stuffed words in their hidden HTML files, and even hid large blocks of white text at the bottom of their page.
Mind you, doing any of this stuff now will get you blacklisted by Google. But it worked back then.
I find it hilarious that I—a fourteen year old—was a huge part of making this pheromone perfume company a success.
It’s one of the things I love about youth. They can excel at things way outside their element. They can succeed in things that should be way over their head. And I think the reason is that they just don’t know any better.
I didn’t know I shouldn’t be able to market a company that sold a product like this. I didn’t have the skill set of the life experience to do it. But I did it anyways.
I wish we could all revert back to our youth—to forget what should and shouldn’t be possible. I’m truly convinced anything is possible if you just get over yourself and do it.
Imagine what you could be doing now if you were still a fourteen year old who didn’t know any better.
