The harsh reality is this: many people won’t be missed when they die. Sure, their friends and family will miss them. It’ll be weird that they’re no longer part of their life. But will society miss them? Probably not.
And I think the reason for this is that many people are trying to be somebody they’re not. They’re trying to fulfill a role somebody else was called to play. Because two people were playing the same role, one won’t be missed when they die.
Does this sound harsh? It feels harsh. But this is the reality we face when we don’t play the unique role God has called us to play. When we try to be somebody we’re not, we have no unique part to play in this world.
Look at it this way: The world is a puzzle. Each of us have our own unique shapes. Our own unique image. Our unique function. Now imagine one piece tried to chop itself up and manipulate itself to become another piece—perhaps a more attractive piece or one that is more high profile (corner piece, somebody).
Now imagine that piece gets lost. Who cares. That piece wasn’t really necessary. But then there’s a big gap in another part of the puzzle that no other piece can fill. The puzzle-player doesn’t care about the lost piece, they care about the piece it should have been. They care about the piece that no other piece could possibly replace.
God has crafted you to be a piece no other person can be. You have a unique shape. A unique role. A unique image that finishes the masterpiece God has created.
Don’t try to be a piece you aren’t made to be. Be yourself. And be yourself to the fullest. Harness your unique gifts, talents, and personality to fulfill God’s purpose on this earth.

That makes me think of people who are not ‘known’, but impact their communities. The guy who does his job for 40 years and dies, but he was who God wanted him to be and his family and community all know him as their support structure. While being dependable isn’t the sexy term anymore, it is what many are called to be and they’re just as important to the puzzle as the famous, lauded figures.
Love that. 🙂
