I see many people who have stopped pursuing their dreams. And I think I’ve noticed the thing all those people have in common—they don’t surround themselves with the right people. Consequently, they don’t have the guidance or the instilled confidence to follow through on their plans.
It’s sad, because dreams aren’t all that hard if you go about them the right way. And the major thing I think that will ensure you follow through on your dream is having the right people around you. Here are those five right people I think everyone needs in their life.
1. Someone who has succeeded in a similar way.
Even though your idea might be brand new, the basics behind it aren’t new. There’s nothing new under the sun. So find someone who has succeeded in a dream that’s parallel or somewhat similar to your dream. They can give you specifics about certain pitfalls you’ll encounter. Plus you’ll be able to learn from things they did right.
2. Someone who has succeeded in a different way.
At the same time, you shouldn’t follow that other person’s advice completely. You need new perspectives on success. So find someone who has succeeded in a totally different type of endeavor. Learn from them. You don’t have to adopt everything they say either. But they will give you a new way to look at what you’re working on, and more perspectives are always better.
3. Someone who isn’t impressed by you.
You need someone who isn’t impressed by your potential success (but also who still loves you). This person will call you on your crap. If you’re starting to get into immoral waters, they’ll pull you back. If you’re starting to work with an unhealthy schedule, they’ll tell you to calm down. Just be sure they actually love you and aren’t just trying to squash your dream.
4. Someone who is impressed by you.
I’m convinced everyone needs someone in their life who thinks they’re amazing. We all need encouragement. Maybe this is your mom. A son or daughter. A dad. A niece. These people will be impressed by everything you do. Your job is to make sure you listen to them and get some perspective about the great things you’re doing. Get a little encouragement from it.
5. Someone way smarter than you.
Finally, any time you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Find someone who’s smarter than you who can help you in the areas where you’re deficient. Even if they don’t work directly with you, hang out with them frequently over coffee. Tell them what you’re working on and let them drop their wisdom on you like a cool, refreshing rain.
So that’s my list of people you need in your life if you hope to succeed at your dream. Who would you add to the list? Who are these various people in your own life? Chime in with a comment below.
