Argentina is known for tango. True tango originated in Argentina and Uruguay. It’s a flirtatious dance – almost violent. It’s exciting to watch.
But there’s a dance far more dangerous and exciting than tango. It’s the dance of the auto. Driving.
Who needs lanes? Who needs stop signs? A three-lane road quickly turns into five (if there are “lanes”). An intersection rarely has stop signs. I still haven’t quite figured out how driving in Argentina works.
I’ve noticed you turn on your emergency lights whenever you break (so you don’t get slammed into). You honk your horn as you’re approaching an intersection (so you don’t get slammed into). The highways have cars traveling at 50 kilometers per hour in one lane, and 150 kilometers per hour in the others. Road signs are more suggestions than rules. It’s electrifying.
I’ve watched my wife’s family drive us around so skillfully. I literally feel like I’m watching the tango. It seems like there’s no rhyme or rhythm to the movement of the cars. But for some reason it works. It’s beautiful.
I think life should be that way. It should be a dance. Instead of living in neat, straight lines…life should be lived dynamically. We should be willing to adapt to the lives around us. We should be able to relax as the world swirls around us. We should live our lives like a dance.
I’m going to try. Will you try with me?
