Sunday| Mag is probably one of my best ideas. It’s not necessarily the content of the site or the design. But the way it functions makes it much more successful than it might be otherwise.
You see, it works great for advertisers. It allows them to make a small investment and get a huge return—longterm—on their sponsorship. It’s a system I’m not sure I’ve seen any other blog or online magazine use.
On the other hand, though, the system has really limited how many people read the mag. It’s really only the super fans and the subscribers—which is still about 10,000… But I know there are more out there.
But knowing my idea wasn’t perfect didn’t keep me from launching the project. There will always be a better idea or a better way to do something. That shouldn’t keep you from following your idea.
I’m proud to say, I think I’ve come up with a way to make it awesome for both advertisers and readers, though. I’ll be making the switch in July.
It’s turning the thing into a hybrid blog/magazine—depending on what level of involvement you want with the mag. Subscribers will get more benefit than they were previously, and passive viewers will get only the content they want.
So my encouragement is this: Follow your dream even when it isn’t perfect. Then perfect it as it’s going. Be willing to try new things and adapt, because the market changes. And with that changing market comes new opportunities and new sparks of inspiration that will turn your great idea into the perfect idea.
