My wife gave me a brilliant idea. It’s one I’d be uniquely qualified to pursue and it could be very lucrative. I’m still not sure if I’ll act on it, but I’ll go ahead and share it with you.
The idea is a store where you can roast your own coffee beans. It would almost be a Build-a-Bear Workshop for coffee. You could choose the country of origin for your beans, choose the intensity of the roast, then sit and sample coffee while it roasted. As you waited, the barista could show you new ways to brew coffee or teach you about the process.
Obviously the cost of the coffee would be one source of revenue. But the biggest source of revenue would be gift items, branded mugs, and brewing equipment. I imagine most people would use this service to buy a gift for their coffee-loving friend. The idea is genius, but I’ll probably never act on it.
And it upsets me a bit. It seems too perfect for me to just leave alone. But the truth is, I have so many of these ideas that just won’t make the cut.
I never abandon an idea. I have a huge list of things I’d eventually like to get to or that I’d love one of my friends to attempt. In fact, I’ve pushed this Build-a-Brew idea on many friends. (Want to do it yourself? Give me a 1% commish and I’ll be fine.)
But the way I know whether or not I need to pursue something is when it keeps me up at night. When I can’t help but research and delve into something…that’s when I know it’s time to pursue it. Mopho.to was like that. Created for More was like that.
What do you have in your head that you just can’t get out? You need to pursue that.
But I’d also love to hear some ideas that you know just won’t make it to reality. Maybe, through sharing your idea, one of your fellow readers will make it happen for themselves. Share in a comment below.

let it be known that I knew about said idea months ago.
and you did NOTHING with it. for shame…
I feel like this gives me freedom to pursue the ideas that just stick in my head and also permission to let my many ideas remain ideas for the sake of creativity without guilt. At what point after the pursuit of an idea that just isn’t coming to fruition is it ok to let it hang as an idea? Thanks, Jonathan.
That’s when wise counsel is important. It could be that the idea was flawed from the start. It might need a tweak. Or it might just need you to persevere and keep going until you pass a tipping point.
Consult with those who have accomplished things like what you’re trying. Not the same things…but things of equal risk.
