I work from home. For some of my friends, that means not wearing pants. All day. It’s a liberty self employment affords to the fortunate few.
But not me. Each morning I get ready the same way I would for church. I don a button down shirt, fix my hair, and even wear a few squirts of cologne. Now, most days I don’t see a single person until my wife gets home around 6pm. But I still go through the routine each morning. Why?
I do it for the discipline. It’s a statement to myself that today I mean business. I don’t care that I’m working from my kitchen table, I’m still doing important work today.
It’s a way to remind myself that today isn’t a time to watch TV, play video games, or watch YouTube videos all day. This isn’t my relaxation time. This is business time.
Plus, when I find myself completely lacking motivation (which happens far too often), I can drop my laptop in my backpack and head to a coffee shop at a moment’s notice. I don’t have any excuse to stay home and remain unmotivated…I’m already ready to face the world.
I have to stay motivated throughout my day. If I hope to write the over 2,000 words and edit the 3,000 words each day…I have to make sure to get things done. It’s discipline.
We all need it. That’s how I get it.
What about you? How do you prepare for the day? How do you tell yourself, “Today is my work day?” If you don’t have a system yet, I encourage you to get one. Maybe you just need to dress nicely and spritz some fragrance on you each morning.
Whatever you have to do…do it. Your work is important. Treat it as such.

I agree 110% Jonathan. My children often asks why I get all ready and don’t leave the house all day. If you don’t take your home office seriously – no one else will. I found you via Dustin Stout on G+
Love that! Glad you found me! 🙂
