I’m currently writing two books at once. One’s a church leadership-type book, the other is a “discover yourself” type book. They’re different. And I’m so glad I’m writing them at the same time.
I did this with Created for More and Unwelcome. I didn’t intend for them to release within a month of each other; that just happened. But I found it so liberating to write the two at once. And here’s why.
I can’t write every day on the same topic. Every day I write seems to drain me. And I need a day or two to recover and re-fill my mind with thoughts on a specific topic. Because books can’t be a disjointed set of topics, it’s hard for me to write each day.
But when I work on two projects simultaneously, it lets me switch my mind. I can let one area rest while the other one keeps going. Then I switch to the next book and let the other part rest.
When I’m just not feeling one topic (which is often), I can choose to work on the other instead. And when I write on one book, I can use the afternoon or down time to research the other book.
I get inside my own head so much when I’m writing, that writing two books keeps me from being able to overthink it. I simply work the outline for both books and get through it. Then I can read it later to see how it turned out.
Usually it involves many re-writes…but that’s the easy part for me. Getting thoughts out on paper seems to be the toughest initially. Once the thoughts are out, editing and tweaking are easy.
So that’s my super-secret trick to writing. Works for me. Would it work for you?
