I had the privilege of being a pastor’s kid for multiple years of my life. I say privilege because I truly had a great experience. I know that isn’t the case for many PK’s. But it was phenomenal to see my dad navigating the waters of pastordom – organizational strategy, betrayals, criticisms, moral and ethical dilemma’s, and effective communication.
Adding to that privilege, I worked with my brother for a couple years alongside my dad. There’s something so special about family members working toward the same goal. When there’s mutual respect, vision and strategy come naturally.
That’s a long setup for a short story. Here’s where it gets good.
Any time my brother and I agreed on a particularly good sermon, my dad always remarked that it required the least amount of preparation. “Dad, that message was phenomenal! That’s what we’re talking about.” But it turns out my dad literally had no great revelations that week. He had to put together a message so he just spoke from his heart. He did a bit of research and reading, but just delivered what came naturally to him.
It’s funny, isn’t it?
I’ve seen this happen in my life. When I have nothing to blog, but I have to blog, I just write something from my heart. It’s something that for me is common place. It’s common sense.
But the magic exists because it’s straight from my heart. It’s what I believe in my core and have tested and found true. It’s something I’ve already solidified in my life. And when I can share something that I live, it registers with people.
It was the same for my dad. When he shared something he lived, people loved it. There was a truth and a moral authority behind his message.
So let me drop this bomb on you. Your best art and your best creativity will be easy to you. It might not even seem like creativity. It might even seem like cheating. But don’t shut down those natural, magical moments. Embrace them. Lean into them. When was the last time you did that?
