Make an ask of yourself. When you have a big dream, asking others for help is often the only way to accomplish it.
Unfortunately, it’s scary to ask others for help. “Will they reject me? Will they be annoyed with me? Will I lose all my friends and become a homeless genius like in ‘The Soloist’?” Relax! Your stress is wearing me out!
You’d be surprised at how willing people are to help. The key is in the approach.
On my stage design site, I frequently get questions like this:
I’m doing a stage design for spring. Got any ideas for me?
When I see that, I have no desire to help. They have put no effort into their project. They’re expecting me to do it all.
A question I am happy to answer is this:
I have a vision for my stage. Could I show you my sketches and get your thoughts?
They did the work. They aren’t expecting me to invest more time in their dream than they are. That’s someone I get excited about helping.
So make an ask of yourself. Do the research. Do the work. Then ask for help from the people who are creatively where you want to be.
