Yesterday I was asked, “How do you find the time to blog so much?!” They were referring to the fact that I blog about 15 times per week…on top of a full-time and part-time job. It’s really not that hard. It’s all about scheduling. I’d like to introduce you to the concept of batch processing.
This is actually an operations management and baking concept. Instead of producing one at a time, like baking a single cookie, you produce a batch instead. So let’s say you need 1 cookie every day. You could either bake 1 cookie each day, or bake 7 at a time, once a week.
That’s what I do with blogging. I sit down for 3 or 4 hours, one day a week, and type my little fingers off. Then I schedule each blog post when I want them to go live.
I know the question you’re about to ask: “How does that work with creative thoughts?”
If I came up with 15 creative concepts in 4 hours I would be so awesome. But that’s not how I do it. All week I’m writing in Evernote, concepts I want to blog about. As soon as I have the idea, I write it down with only as much information as I’ll need to complete the thought. They’re usually fairly simple notes.
Then when it comes to my writing time, I just convert those ideas into blogs. Voila!
Now imagine how this concept could apply to your creative endeavors and improve your creativity. How can you batch your processes?

Wow! Literally had my mind blown with that concept! Thanks for the enlightenment!
you got it man! what are you gonna “batch”?

I use this concept with e-mail, returning phone calls
…and reading blogs. (your blogs, of course…)
I was first introduced to batching tasks through Dale Carnegie.
This is a key productivity tip in his courses…
Thats great 🙂 I love Dale Carnegie. Ever since he taught me to win friends and so on 🙂
I need to go to one of the seminars
Yeah. In the Northwest we have a group called ‘PeaceMakers’ most of the top leadership attend our church… (long story, short-ish) one of them is a certified instructor for Dale Carnegie. The whole staff of the church went through the course… all-in-all, pretty good stuff.

Great concept! I’ve been leaning toward this idea more and more lately and you hit the nail on the head. I am a batch processing fan.
What made you decide to run 3 blogs instead of one?
I run 3 different blogs because they reach different targets. Trying to keep them very focussed so I’m not all over the place with my posts. 🙂
