One question. What’s the biggest thing you’ve learn about creativity? Camron Ware answers: “There isn’t really anything new. Each idea is just modified.”
My take: The greatest inventions are all built upon the ideas that came before. The phonograph was created in response to the movie projector. The inventor figured what was done for the eye could be done for the ear. Everything is built on the concepts and discoveries of the things that came before.
While this may deglamorize creativity, it takes the pressure off us. Next time you’re feeling bummed because your work isn’t from a different realm, realize that’s ok.
We are all inspired by different things. Your favorite creative seems like his stuff is unlike anything else. But the truth is, they are inspired by different stimuli than you are. So if you were in their shoes you might feel the same way about their art as you do about yours.
So relax. Don’t rip off other people’s ideas. But be inspired and create what comes to you. Though it’s built on someone else’s work, it is distinctly yours because you are you.
About Community Pool:
These posts are all about drawing from the creative community. Every creative has a unique perspective. When we share in others’ perspectives our own creative lens gets wider. So I ask one simple question of creatives. I share it with you, then I unfold it.
