Yesterday I had one of my monthly blogging discussions with my brother and dad. Every month I further convince them they need to be blogging and show them the new tools and goodies I’m using.
My brother has finally caught the blogging bug. He’s going through the long process of becoming a published author and has started getting some serious traffic. So yesterday I was helping him take his blog off a popular blogging site and onto his own web host. Then in about 10 minutes I spouted out about 15 websites/plugins I use that are absolute necessities for successful blogging.
His eyes glazed over.
Suddenly he was discouraged.
I quickly realized I was pouring over 2 1/2 years of knowledge on him in 10 minutes. He didn’t need to learn and do all these things right now. You can’t learn to swim in Niagara Falls.
So instead I helped him focus on two things that were super important. First thing’s first.
There’s always a temptation to look at the big picture and see all the small, necessary components. Then we get overwhelmed. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
We need to prioritize our actions. Figure out what needs to happen first and focus on that. The other things can come later. I started my stage design site two years ago without any of my current knowledge. The content was first. I focussed on that. Once I got that going I could start adding the other stuff.
Focus on the most important thing when you start your big projects. Don’t try to do it all at once. Don’t get discouraged before you even start.

I would actually describe the experience more like drinking from Iguazu Falls during flooding season. The waters were murky and lots of debris was in my face. Thanks bro!

Encouraging words Jonathan, thank you. As a 60+ year old creative, there are a number of intimidating mediums I would like to pursue. Looking at the whole process of learning something new can be very overwhelming. It is so helpful when spry young minds can be patient with those of us challenged by new things.

Right on but now you’ve got less experienced guys like me wanting the knowledge you have. Can you telepath it to me?
