The other day one of my Sunday| Mag writers approached me with a problem. He had writer’s block. I’d assigned an article to him earlier. He was eager to write. But he couldn’t get past that mental block. I love his humility in approaching me. That’s a hard task in itself.
And of course I was happy to oblige. I sat down to an email and brainstormed. I found myself writing about 300 words in about two minutes. And it was pretty good. I’m not going to lie.
To write 300 great words in a couple minutes…that’s not a normal thing for me. I usually over think, edit, delete…but something was different about helping someone else. I wasn’t so self conscious. I allowed my thoughts to flow unfiltered.
So you’re dealing with writer’s block. Can I suggest you do what my writer did. Ask someone for help. Then offer someone else your help. Write for someone else as they write for you.
You don’t even need to swap your work. That day was one of my most creative days. Ideas came quickly and flowed even quicker. By helping someone else I knocked something loose in my brain that got the juices flowing.
Perhaps it truly is better to give than to receive.
I’ve recently hit a pretty bad writers block. I’ve got great ideas, titles, and sequences, but nothing is coming together. Maybe I need to talk it out with someone else.
