What happens when you add to perfection? It’s no longer perfect. If you could make something more perfect, it wasn’t perfect in the first place.
We become our own enemies when we overwork our creativity. It’s a huge temptation to over-meddle. The temptation comes from insecurity.
Take chefs. Because they’re already working with good, raw ingredients, it feels like they need to overwork the meal to make it “theirs”. Instead of leaving a delicious orange alone, they’re tempted to season it, cook it or mix it up. The best chefs work simply, rather than overworking their ingredients.
Designers at Apple avoid overcreating. The functionality of their product is the design. They don’t add extra stuff. The iPad has one button…its simplicity is almost stumping. But it works…and brilliantly.
Are you tempted to overcreate? Do you find yourself finishing a great project, but wanting to add something to it? Stop! Don’t overwork your masterpiece.

Great, simple thought…Makes sense, but I have never thought of it that way before
I frequently over create…haha

Hey Jonathan! Found you in my google alert for creativity! 🙂 I just started a podcast/blog about The CreativeLife so I've been trolling the web for good stuff. Love this refreshing and concise message about not overworking. As much as there's a total glut of reality/competition shows like Top Chef, etc…what I like about them is they give the greater public at LEAST a little glimpse into the creative process. Think what you will about the shows, it's help me pick up those nuggets about chefs per your mention.
Looking forward to reading more of your stuff!! Cheers!

Hi Jonathan. I stumbled on your website, as I was up all night trying to come up with original ideas for a job interview I have in two days. Your insight into creativity is incredibly well written. And you
helped me with your blog, especially the “Over-creating” post.
The only thing I’m not crazy about is the name “Faking Creativity”. The name put me off at first, and I almost passed over the site. I’m glad I didn’t.
Thanks for the feedback, Jasna! I hope you get the job! I checked out your demo reel…looks great!
Got any tips for improving my branding? Faking Creativity is a concept…a way of looking at creativity…but it doesn’t work so well as a brand if you aren’t familiar with it. 😛
