I’ve been reading Ender’s Shadow (a companion book to Ender’s Game) for my own enjoyment. The book’s brilliant.
But I’ve discovered wisdom that applies to almost everything I do in these books too. One paragraph from the book stood out in a major way to me. And I thought I’d share the wisdom with you.
“The criminal misuse of time was pointing out mistakes. Catching them―noticing them―that was essential. If you did not in your own mind distinguish between useful and erroneous information, then you were not learning at all, you were merely replacing ignorance with false belief, which was no improvement.”
This musing from the main character came during a lecture from a teacher. The teacher was chastising a student for questioning something he’d said. He basically said not to question the knowledge—that was a waste of time.
But I love the response.
It’s so important we question everything we hear. If we swallow false facts—it doesn’t matter how many fill our heads—it’s useless for us. It’s only in understanding the difference between true and false that we grow.
I encourage you to question everything you hear or watch or read. Don’t be a jerk and call people out on false ideas…that’s a waste of time. But don’t let false thoughts swim around in your head. Question is all and only accept the good.
1st Pet. 3:15 “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,”
You mean God already had this idea?! Dang it! He beats me to all of the best ideas…
