I haven’t spoken Spanish in fourteen years. But today I was fluent.
I grew up in Guatemala, so I picked up a few things. But a few years after moving to the US I lost my Spanish skills. A few years later I married an Argentine girl. I’ve been meaning to relearn the lost language, but I haven’t made the time.
But today I spoke. I spoke it well. And I spoke like an Argentine! I was using words and accents that I shouldn’t know! These two guys from Mexico were baffled by this bright-white gringo speaking like I was from Buenos Aires.
What happened? Where did this new found linguistic prowess come from? My wife, of course! I’d say we hang out frequently. And I apparently caught the language. I caught the accents. I caught the slang. The Spanish bug got inside me and took over.
What skill do you want? There are two ways to learn it. You can study the skill for years or you can marry it. More is learned from close proximity than from formal education. Are you hanging around the people who have the skills you desire?
Start! Hang around with folks who are great at what they do. Learn from them. It may seem simple, but soon you’ll find you’re fluent in creativity.

I think that can apply a lot to how we approach God's word too! Do we marry His word? Are we in it constantly trying to learn the language of it? Or when people ask us the hard questions about our Faith, are we not really sure how to respond? I know I'm not ready in season and out…
True that!
