I’ve been consumed lately with this idea that art and creativity are becoming a god for church workers. We have so many websites, conferences, books, and leaders devoted to teaching church workers how to make amazing art. How do you reach people with art.
The same is true for leadership. “You must have a huge vision. You must be an amazing leader!”
It’s so easy for church leaders to start seeking leadership, creativity, and art instead of seeking God. The tool we use to reach people quickly becomes our god. Even our building becomes an object of worship rather than a place of worship.
The problem is…leadership and creativity are not bad. God created those tools. He is the source of all truth and the truth is…those things are important.
But humans always struggle with the temptation of extremes. It’s difficult to balance. So we have some church leaders that ignore leadership and creativity, and some that overemphasis or even worship the two. But both of those are missing out. They’re missing the sweet spot where God is in charge but we use the tools He gave us.
I’d like to encourage you to seek balance. There’s nothing wrong with the websites, conferences, books and leaders. Use them and consume them. But never let those things become gods. Constantly check yourself.
I will.
