Secret societies: those spooky, clandestine organizations allegedly responsible for every dastardly event in history. You know what the true power of the secret society is, though? It’s the fact that no one really knows what they’re doing…if anything.
For all we know, the Illuminati might be a recipe swapping club…but we assume they assassinate world leaders, rig elections and put mind-controlling chemicals in our drinking water. That’s the beauty of letting others define your work. The mystery can grow until it becomes legend.
Some of the best works are analyzed for years to come–the Mona Lisa, American Pie (the song), etc.
Good creativity doesn’t need to be explained. It will speak for itself and grow in your audience’s mind. Avoid the temptation to define your work. Let’s heed Don McClean’s advice that creators “should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.”
