Blogging is one of the greatest things I’ve done for my job at my local church. It’s upped the quality of Sunday mornings—especially in my departments. Naturally, I think every creative should blog. Blogging does four things for you:
1. Blogging helps you keep track of the things you’re learning. I use my blogs to document my failures and successes. Each time I fail or succeed, I force myself to learn a lesson. Then I simply blog that lesson. Instead of letting a learning moment pass me by, I journal it. I save it for the future.
2. Blogging holds you accountable for the things you learn. If the people you work with read your blog, they learn what you learn. If you don’t follow through with your publicized education, you’ll hear about it. (Note: it will probably take physically subscribing your co-workers to your blog for them to read it at first.)
3. Blogging forces you to learn new things because you need content. If you blog consistently and publicize your blog, people will start reading. At some point, you’ll find a week that you don’t really learn anything. But blogging will put the extra pressure on you to learn something new.
4. Blogging will keep you more aware of what other people are doing. One of the best sources of blog content when you run out of your own is other people. Blogging has forced me to follow other churches and see what they’re doing.
